The US Presidential Rhetoric in Mobilizing the Home Front for the Iraq War of 2003
چکیده لاتین
A majority of Americans supported the invasion of Iraq in March 2003 even though Iraq was not involved in the attacks of September 11th. The Presidential rhetoric was a main pillar of the campaign to mobilize the American public for the invasion of Iraq. President Bush used three main arguments to justify the invasion of Iraq: The Iraqi regime led by Saddam Hussein had ties to terrorism including ties to Al-Qaida, The Iraqi regime had Weapons of Mass Destruction and was very close to obtaining Nuclear Weapons and The Iraqi regime led by Saddam Hussein was evil. These arguments were repeated by key administration officials. A highly secretive committee was formed in August 2002 in the White House by Bush’s Chief of Staff, Andrew Card, called the White House Iraq Group (WHIG) to coordinate efforts to sell the Iraqi War to Americans. By using the above three arguments accompanied by a constant usage of fear appeals after the post 9/11 atmosphere along with the use of American values especially the value of ‘Freedom’, President Bush was successful in winning the consent of the American public for the invasion. The results of this research show that President Bush’s rhetoric made extensive usage of Propaganda Consistency and Exposure Learning theories and in the end was successful in categorizing the Iraq War as part of the ‘War on Terror’, and thus classify the Iraq War as a response to the 9/11 attacks.
