| Iran’s nuclear program is one of the major issues in the relationship between Iran and the United States after the Islamic Revolution. There have been ups and downs in this case over the years due to the different American approaches. The two approaches of “unilateralism” and “multilateralism” are among the most important ones. During George W. Bush presidency, Washington was pursuing unilateralist policies and hegemony has been followed. In the last years of Bush administration, the policy of this government was multi-faceted, which was not, of course, a strong approach. This was because of its inefficiencies in the Middle East. Obama pursued multilateral policies in various areas, including Iran’ case and negotiating with Iran, and co cooperating with P5+1 were the results of American multilateralism and a change in Iranian politics. This paper, by employing a comparative method, seeks to compare these two basic approaches and the question is that, “How are Bush and Obama administration’s approaches to Iran’s nuclear case comparable?” with the hypothesis that in comparison US policies towards Iran’s nuclear case, “hegemony and militarism” are important indicators of unilateralism and “international cooperation and institutionalism” are important indicators of multilateralism. | |
